About the SHA Athletic Program
The athletic department is led by Donna Bender Moir ’79. During her tenure, the program has experienced tremendous growth and success and has accrued more than 80 of our total 110 state championships since she took the lead in 1991.
As the head basketball coach, Moir became the first woman in the state to win the basketball championship as a player (1976) and as a coach (2002, 2003, 2004, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024). Coach Moir is a member of the KY High School Basketball Hall of Fame, the Metro Athletic Directors Hall of Fame, the KY Athletic Hall of Fame, the Louisville Catholic Sports Hall of Fame, and the Valkyrie Hall of Fame. She was honored as the 2019-20 NATIONAL Girls Basketball Coach of the Year and the 2020-21 State Girls Basketball Coach of the Year.
Mackenzie Moir, Assistant Athletic Director and Varsity Golf Coach, joined the athletic staff in 2018. She graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in 2011 and played golf for the University of Cincinnati.
These Forever Valkyries pour their hearts into everything and everyone they touch at Sacred Heart and are beloved by their students, staff, and parents.
About Horton Field
Coach Moir was interviewed by the Motz Group, the company responsible for installing our first turf field and replacing it, to highlight our partnership in providing the safest surfaces for our student-athletes. SHA’s on-campus, state-of-the-art turf field is used year-round by three lacrosse teams (90 players), three field hockey teams (80 players) two soccer teams (45 players), and our championship flag football team. It also has multiple summer camps, PE classes, field days, and other special occasions.
Horton Field is a CrossFlex synthetic turf system from the Motz Group that has installed 500+ sports fields in over 40 years. The turf field was originally installed in 2010 and fully replaced summer of 2020. It has a shock absorption/concussion pad and Envirofill. According to the website, Envirofill is a firm, fast, and safe surface built for maximum playability. Microban® antimicrobial protection is infused into Envirofill during the manufacturing process to help prevent the growth of bacteria, mold, and mildew that can cause stains, odors, and product deterioration.
Horton Field is a special place for our athletes, coaches, and fans. And of course, it’s full of HEART.
